COFFS HARBOUR: Sydney Sixers pulled off a tense three-wicket win over Brisbane Heat in the 24th match of Big Bash League (BBL) 15 at the International Sports Stadium. It was a match dominated by bowlers, with runs hard to come by throughout. Babar Azam once again failed to make an impact, but Joel Davies and Hayden Kerr held their nerve to take the Sixers over the line in a dramatic chase.
Heat struggle to build a big total
Brisbane Heat were put in to bat first and finished on 114 for 9 in 20 overs. They started quickly, thanks to an aggressive cameo from Jack Wildermuth, who smashed 31 off 17 balls with two fours and two sixes. Lachlan Hearne supported him early, but he could only score 1 before getting out.
The Sixers struck back strongly through Sean Abbott and Jack Edwards, who removed both openers and stopped the early flow of runs. With the Heat at 33 for 2 after four overs, the Sixers tightened the screws.
Things got worse for Brisbane when their key batters failed to settle. Matt Renshaw was dismissed for 2, and Max Bryant went for 3, both falling within two overs. From that point on, Heat struggled to build partnerships.
Hugh Weibgen tried to steady the innings and top-scored with 24 off 25 balls, hitting a boundary that took the Heat past 100. But overall, the Sixers’ bowling remained disciplined, and Brisbane never found momentum. They ended with a below-par total, hoping their bowlers could defend it.
Sixers collapse early in the chase
Chasing just 115, Sydney Sixers looked set for a straightforward run chase—but the Heat bowlers made it anything but simple.
Oli Patterson rocked the Sixers in the third over by taking two quick wickets. Babar Azam fell for 2, and Josh Philippe was dismissed for a duck, leaving the Sixers 15 for 2.
Captain Moises Henriques and Daniel Hughes tried to rebuild and added 17 runs together. But Xavier Bartlett removed Hughes for 15, putting the Heat back on top.
Brisbane then increased the pressure with tight, attacking bowling. Jordan Silk (6) and Jack Edwards (0) were both dismissed in the same over, and soon after, Henriques and Ben Manenti also got out. The Sixers were in big trouble at 56 for 7 in 10.3 overs.
At that stage, Brisbane Heat looked firmly in control.
Davies and Kerr rescue Sixers with unbeaten stand
With the Sixers collapsing, Joel Davies and Hayden Kerr produced a calm and mature partnership. Instead of taking risky shots, they focused on rotating the strike, picking up singles, and punishing any loose balls.
Their unbeaten stand of 62 runs completely changed the match and carried the Sixers to victory.
Davies played the more attacking role, scoring 35 off 26 balls, including three fours and a six. Kerr supported him perfectly, finishing on 27 off 25 balls* with a four and a six.
The Sixers reached the target on the fourth ball of the 18th over, sealing a hard-fought win from what had looked like a losing position.
Bowlers shine for Heat
Even though Brisbane lost, their bowlers were outstanding. Oli Patterson and Matthew Kuhnemann took four wickets each, keeping the Sixers under constant pressure. Xavier Bartlett, Jack Wildermuth, and Matt Renshaw picked up one wicket apiece.
Summary
Sydney Sixers won a thrilling low-scoring match thanks to strong bowling and an excellent late partnership between Davies and Kerr. Brisbane Heat dominated for large parts of the chase, but their modest total and the Sixers’ lower-order fightback proved decisive. Meanwhile, Babar Azam’s poor run continued, as he was dismissed cheaply again.
